Introduction to Javascript

by Bob Stone on Jul.29, 2009, under General Webmaster

Javascript is a useful tool for many webmasters, allowing them to create applets that can perform a wide variety of different functions. Javascript is a fairly advanced technique, however, and isn’t recommended for beginners who don’t have programming experience. It is based in part on the high level programming language known as Java. You should be fully proficient in more basic web design tools such as HTML and CSS before thinking about learning Javascript. Whenever you try to find a web designer, make sure they have an excellent knowledge of Javascript.

The first thing that you need to do before adding some Javascript is prepare the browser to read the script. This is done by using the script tag, the basic form is as follows:

<script type=”text/javascript>

This lets the browser know to expect some Javascript code. Without this, it would try to interpret the code as HTML and nothing useful would happen. Of course, once the script is done, you must close the tag with </script>.

Once you’ve initialized the script, you need to run some commands. There are hundreds of different Javascript commands with a wide variety of different functions. The simplest example is a simple script that writes some text on the page. The command to do this is as follows:

document.write(“Enter your text here!”);

Technically, this is known as calling a method. In this case, you’re calling the method “write” of the object “document,” which results in whatever text you like being written to the document in question – in this case a web page. That’s the most basic functionality of Javascript. Taking the time to learn the script fully will provide you with many powerful tools.

Focused Web Design

by Bob Stone on Jul.27, 2009, under Web Design

When browsing the Internet, most people have very little patience. They’ve come to your site for something, whether it’s to purchase something or just to discover some information. A lot of traffic that most sites get comes directly from search engines, so it’s important to keep in mind how easy it is for people to find a replacement. All they have to do is hit the back button, and click on the next option in the search window. With that in mind, it’s your job to get straight to the point and let the visitor know what you can offer them. Or you could simply hire an affordable website designing service.

Optimally, your main home page should let a user go wherever they want on your site. You don’t have to link to every single sub-page, but you cover all of the major categories. It should also include some sort of mission statement, letting them know exactly what it is that they’ll be able to find on your site. Most people don’t want to browse around a site for ten minutes only to discover that it doesn’t have what they’re after – so they’ll just find a site that they’re sure about.

Another good idea is to embed some sort of search feature right on your main page. This will let visitors just run a quick search and find out the information that they’re looking for. The first instinct might be to make your web sites labyrinthine, like a department store, but there’s a key difference: all a person has to do to leave a website is click. Focused navigation is the best way to ensure an enjoyable viewing experience for users.

Premises of Link Building

by Bob Stone on Jul.24, 2009, under Link Building

Effective search engine marketing through link building requires a good deal of finesse. There are a lot of subtle tactics that you can employ to help build link popularity and push your site higher in search engine rankings. Here are a few of them:

Use effective lists. People like lists that are made of punchy, to-the-point tips that are easily digestible. If you make a list that has good information and is easy to read, people will be more than happy to link to it.

Flawless writing. If people believe that your site is authoritative, they are that much more likely to link to it. If your text is riddled with errors in spelling and grammar, it looks unprofessional and unreliable.

Blog consistently. Write compelling blog content and update frequently. Link to other blogs and sites as much as you can – if your content is good they are likely to return to the favor. Commenting on other blogs can also drive some traffic your way and generate goodwill.

Never, ever spam. This includes posting in forums or on other blogs, or dealing with link-farm style directories. Spamming links to your site completely out of context is a definite way to hurt your relevance, and possibly have your site removed altogether.

Run contests. People love the opportunity for free stuff. If you’ve got a little extra cash to throw around, it can go a long way and generate a lot of links. If you think about how many big businesses run sweepstakes, you’ll realize how effective it can be.

Making Money Online by Typing

by Bob Stone on Jul.14, 2009, under Making Money Online

One of the most commonly referred to work at home jobs is content writing or medical/legal transcription. While the actual opportunities in this business aren’t particularly common, they do exist. That said, as with all work at home opportunities, it’s a good idea to be wary of potential scams.

The basic idea behind these jobs is simply to type out the notes that doctors or lawyers take during their busy days. These may be in the form of handwritten notes, or they may be recorded on some sort of portable audio device. Either way, it’s important that these notes are properly typed out so that they can be easily read and shared by all the people that need to see them. That’s where the demand for transcribers comes in.

Two things are valued in the transcription field: speed and accuracy. Speed is important due to the sheer volume of documents and recording that need to be transcribed. Accuracy is even more vital, because even the smallest mistake can be huge when it pertains to a legal medical or legal matter – just imagine what might happen if a transcriber were to mistype a dosage of a patient’s medication!

Breaking into this field can be difficult. It’s important not to get overly excited, however, as many scammers will try to sell you a “start up kit” to become a transcriber. Generally, any business that wants to charge you in order to offer you work should be avoided at all costs.
